"Why doesn't a POS exist that you can simply open and use?"

I spent more than 14 years working in retail. During that time I watched point-of-sale systems become increasingly complicated, expensive, and locked behind subscriptions, accounts, and unnecessary friction.

Many small businesses were just trying to survive. Market sellers, pop-up shops, small stores, school events, independent traders — they don't need a SaaS platform. They need a reliable till that works immediately.

But most POS systems expect businesses to:

  • Create accounts before making a single sale
  • Pay monthly fees with or without revenue
  • Stay permanently connected to the internet
  • Learn dashboards designed for enterprise
  • Buy into ecosystems of hardware and integrations

I kept asking the same question. Why doesn't a POS exist that you can simply open and use? Upload your product list. Start selling. Nothing else. VesselTill is built around that idea.

Today I am building VesselTill while living in a homeless shelter. I studied computer science but could not complete my degree due to financial circumstances. Even so, I kept building — because I believe small businesses deserve software that respects their time, money, and independence.

Is VesselTill free — no hidden costs?
Yes. No subscription, no monthly fees, no transaction fees, no ads. It is free to use.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Zero registration. No email, no password. Open the app and start selling.
How do I get my products in?
Upload an Excel (.xlsx) file with product names and prices. Products appear instantly as cards. Barcodes, stock and categories are optional.
What happens to my data if I close the browser?
Your data is stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB) and persists between sessions. Use the Backup tab to download a JSON file regularly — especially if you clear browser data or switch devices.
Does it process card payments?
VesselTill records that a card was used — it does not process the transaction. Use your existing card machine (Yoco, Square, SumUp, iZettle, etc.) and confirm the amount in VesselTill. Zero processing fees.
Does it work in any country and currency?
Yes. VesselTill supports 42 currencies including USD, GBP, EUR, ZAR, KES, NGN, GHS, INR, AUD, VND, PHP, IDR, MYR, THB and more. It is designed for sellers anywhere in the world.
Can I use it on my phone at a market stall?
Yes. Works on any phone browser. Install as a PWA ("Add to Home Screen") and it runs offline like a native app. No app store needed.
Can I add my business name and logo to receipts?
Yes. Open the Settings tab inside the app and enter your business name, phone number, address, VAT or tax number, and a receipt footer message. You can also upload your logo. Everything appears on all receipt surfaces — on-screen, WhatsApp, PDF, and email — and the VesselTill tagline is automatically hidden when a custom business name is set.
What happens to stock when I process a return or exchange?
Stock is restored automatically. When you process a return from the History tab, VesselTill adds the returned quantities back to your product inventory immediately. Exchanges work the same way — the returned items go back into stock, and the replacement items are deducted when the new sale is completed. You can also void a sale entirely from History, which restores all stock from that transaction.
How many currencies does VesselTill support?
42 currencies across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and Oceania — including ZAR, USD, GBP, EUR, NGN, KES, GHS, INR, VND, PHP, IDR, MYR, THB, SGD, CNY, JPY, KRW, AED, BRL, AUD and more. Switch currency at any time from the header — it updates instantly across all prices, receipts, and reports.
What is the difference between a Refund and an Exchange?
A Refund returns money to the customer — by cash, card, or store credit. An Exchange issues a credit equal to the return value and applies it automatically to the customer's next purchase in the same session. Both flows start the same way: find the original sale in History, tap Return / Exchange, select the items, and choose the outcome. Stock is updated correctly either way.
Does VesselTill have cloud sync?
Not yet. VesselTill currently stores all your data locally on your device, allowing you to use the app with no account. VesselTill Sync is currently in development and will be available as an optional upgrade for businesses that need multiple tills, automatic cloud backups, and synchronised sales across devices. Every VesselTill Sync account will include a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Planned pricing: $6/month or $60/year. The core version of VesselTill will always remain free.
You say "No Subscription." Why is there a paid plan?
VesselTill does not require a subscription to run your business. If you are using a single device, the POS remains completely free with no restrictions. VesselTill Sync is an optional upgrade designed for growing businesses that need multiple tills, cloud backups, and synchronised sales between devices. Instead of forcing businesses to migrate to a different POS as they grow, VesselTill grows with them. If you never need VesselTill Sync, you will never need to pay.
Where is VesselTill Sync data stored?
VesselTill Sync securely synchronises your business data using your own Google account and Google Drive. There is no separate VesselTill server account to create. Using Google Sign-In keeps the setup simple while allowing your connected POS devices to stay synchronised using storage you already own and trust. The free version of VesselTill continues to work completely offline with no login required.
Why does VesselTill Sync require Google Sign-In?
VesselTill Sync uses Google Sign-In to securely connect your POS devices to your own Google Drive. This allows VesselTill to synchronise your business data between devices while keeping your data under your control — not on a VesselTill server. If you only use the free version, you will never need to sign in.
What happens after my 14-day VesselTill Sync trial?
Your VesselTill Sync features will simply stop working until you subscribe. Your business data remains completely safe. You can continue using VesselTill free on a single device with no login or subscription required. If you want to continue using cloud sync, multi-till synchronisation, and automatic backups, you can subscribe for $6/month or $60/year.
Do I need a credit card for the VesselTill Sync free trial?
No. You can try every VesselTill Sync feature free for 14 days without entering any payment details. After the trial, you can either subscribe or continue using the free version of VesselTill with no loss of your existing data.
Can I cancel VesselTill Sync at any time?
Yes. You can cancel your VesselTill Sync subscription at any time. Your cloud synchronisation features will stop at the end of your billing period, but you can continue using the free version of VesselTill on a single device with all of your existing local data.
Why is it free? What's the catch?
There is no catch. VesselTill was built by a founder who spent 14 years in retail and was frustrated by POS systems that put profit before simplicity. The mission is to give every seller a till that works immediately, without barriers. There are no investors to appease and no recurring revenue targets.
Do you sell or look at my data?
No. Your business data (products, sales, receipts, settings) is stored locally on your device and never uploaded anywhere — we can't see it even if we wanted to. We use Google Analytics and Search Console only to see overall visit numbers to this site, never to identify individuals or access your business data, and we don't sell data to anyone. When VesselTill Sync launches, your synced data lives in your own Google Drive, not on a VesselTill server. Full details in Terms & Privacy.

If you use the VesselTill app, your products, sales, receipts, staff, and settings are stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB). None of it is uploaded to any server. If you clear your browser data or switch devices without backing up, it's gone — we don't hold a copy anywhere.

📊 Analytics on this site

We use Google Analytics and Google Search Console — only to see whether people are finding and visiting VesselTill, roughly how many, and from where. We don't sell your data to anyone, and we don't use analytics to identify or track you personally — it's aggregate visit counts, nothing more. Analytics never sees your business data, which stays on your device as described above.

Messages sent through the Contact section are delivered via Formspree, a third-party form service, so we can receive them by email. That's the only thing the contact form is used for.

☁️ Coming soon: VesselTill Sync

We're building an optional Sync feature for multi-till (multi-POS) setups, which will require signing in with Google. When you use it, your data is saved to your own Google account (Google Drive) — not to VesselTill's servers. It stays under your control, in your account, the same way a Google Doc or Sheet does. Sync will be entirely optional; the free, local-only version of VesselTill keeps working exactly as it does today.
